KUALA LUMPUR – The Speedy Tigers have been rewarded with RM160,000 in incentives after their silver-medal finish at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) recognising the sacrifices and commitment that went into their campaign.

The incentive will be shared among 20 players and eight team officials in recognition of Malaysia’s achievement at the continental multi-sport event.

MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said the silver medal was a testament to the team’s hard work, discipline and determination in carrying the nation’s hopes against some of Asia’s strongest hockey sides.

He stressed that the achievement should not be taken for granted, describing it as a proud moment for Malaysian hockey and an important milestone in the development of the national team.

“This silver medal is a source of immense pride for Malaysia and the entire hockey fraternity. It did not come easily, but was earned through the hard work, perseverance, discipline and sacrifices of every player, coach and support staff member who worked tirelessly to represent the country,” he told Scoop when contacted.

Subahan said the result carried added significance as it marked Malaysia’s third silver medal in men’s hockey at the Asian Games, which celebrated its 75th anniversary, following similar finishes in 2010 and 2018.

He added that the latest achievement reflected the team’s ability to compete at the highest level in Asia, while providing encouragement for the national side to continue raising its standards in future international competitions.

“I want to express my sincere appreciation to everyone in the team for their commitment and dedication throughout the campaign. Winning a third Asian Games silver medal, after the achievements in 2010 and 2018, is a significant moment for the MHC and Malaysian hockey as a whole.

“This is an achievement that everyone involved can be proud of, but we must also use it as motivation to keep improving and strive for even greater success in the years ahead,” he said.

With two major tournaments approaching, Subahan urged the Speedy Tigers to build on their Asian Games performance and maintain their momentum as they prepare for the next challenges on the international stage.

Malaysia will compete in the Asian Champions Trophy in India from October 27 to November 5, before returning to domestic soil for the 2026 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Perak.

Subahan also challenged the national team to raise its game against India at the Asian Champions Trophy, expressing hope that the Speedy Tigers could produce an upset against the Asian powerhouse.

He said the MHC would also strengthen preparations for the qualifying campaign for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, scheduled to take place next year, as Malaysia seek to end their absence from the Olympic hockey competition.

The confederation hopes the experience gained from the Asian Games and the upcoming international assignments will help the national side close the gap on Asia’s leading teams and improve its chances of securing an Olympic berth. – October 16, 2026
