KUALA LUMPUR – Former Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has publicly confirmed that he was one of two individuals detained by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) on Thursday.
In a candid Facebook post today, the former PKR vice-president—who now leads the newly formed party Bersama—explained that the incident occurred after a meeting with friends at a studio in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.
According to Nik Nazmi, the group decided to move the session to Petaling Jaya to review materials linked to a project they were discussing. By the time JAIS officers raided the premises, only he and the woman were present at the location.
“I admit it was a mistake. As I also informed the JAIS officers, we certainly did not engage in any indecent act that could raise suspicion,” he said.
Expressing deep remorse, Nik Nazmi stated that he does not intend to prolong the controversy and tendered an unreserved apology to his family, the woman’s family, and all affected parties.
Addressing his current political platform, he acknowledged the damage the incident has caused to Bersama and expressed readiness to face any disciplinary action or decisions the party leadership chooses to enforce.
“I also apologize to the Bersama party for disappointing Bersama members and supporters, as this matter affects the party, and I will accept whatever decision the party makes,” he added.
Nik Nazmi pledged full cooperation with legal authorities and appealed to the public to respect the ongoing due process rather than fueling media speculation.
The arrest was officially confirmed yesterday by JAIS Director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad, who stated that two individuals were taken into custody around 6 pm on Thursday to assist in investigations under Section 29 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995.
Under Selangor syariah law, a conviction under Section 29 carries a maximum fine of RM3,000, up to two years’ imprisonment, or both. – October 17, 2026
