Ditch Waze, switch to TuJu over concerns about Israel and data security: Anwar warns Malaysians

PM says the government cannot compromise on protecting Malaysians’ personal information

KUALA LUMPUR – The government is encouraging Malaysians to use TuJu, a local road navigation application developed by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), as an alternative to Waze amid concerns over data security.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the recommendation stemmed from potential risks to the security of Malaysians’ personal information and movement data, citing Waze’s obligations under Israeli government laws, Bernama reported.

He said the matter was among those discussed at the National Cyber Security Committee’s third meeting of 2026, which he chaired today to review emerging cyber threats and strengthen the country’s digital sovereignty and preparedness.

“Also discussed were the implementation of the Cyber Security Act 2024, the security of MyDigital ID, preparations for quantum computing threats through post-quantum cryptography (PQC), emerging threats based on autonomous artificial intelligence, and the protection of National Critical Information Infrastructure (NCII).

“We cannot compromise on the security of the people’s data and identities. Therefore, the government is strengthening the integrated identity ecosystem, with MyKad serving as a physical credential and MyDigital ID for digital transactions, backed by stronger cyber protection, including preparations for future threats through PQC,” he said in a Facebook post.

Anwar said these efforts were crucial to ensuring that the digitalisation of public services continued to benefit the public without compromising security, trust or national sovereignty. – October 20, 2026
