KUALA LUMPUR – The Sarawak State Legislative Assembly will be officially dissolved this coming Monday, October 26, clearing the runway for the 13th Sarawak State Election to be called within the next 60 days.

Sarawak Premier and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg confirmed the major political development during a special press conference at the Satria Pertiwi Complex today, revealing that Head of State Tun Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has granted formal consent for the dissolution.

Addressing candidate line-ups for the upcoming polls, Abang Johari revealed that GPS will field a strategic blend of seasoned veterans and fresh dynamic faces across all contested seats.

“What I can share here is that it will be a combination of the experienced and the young.

“Certainly, there will be new faces—some incumbents are not being dropped, but are instead choosing to step aside on their own accord,” he explained.

Abang Johari added that the coalition’s final candidate list will be finalized during an upcoming special meeting before a public announcement in the near future.

The ruling GPS coalition—comprising Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP)—enters the race looking to replicate its resounding 2021 landslide, where it captured 76 out of 82 seats. – October 23, 2026
