KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has opened an investigation into a Facebook post suspected of containing extremely offensive remarks against Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

In a statement today, the commission said the content also touched on sensitive issues involving race, religion and royalty (3R).

It said the individual concerned had their statement recorded at the Sri Petaling police station to assist with the investigation.

MCMC also seized a mobile phone and a SIM card as part of its probe.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.

“MCMC takes seriously the dissemination of online content suspected of containing false information or elements of insult against the royal institution, particularly content that could undermine social harmony,” it said.

The commission urged the public to exercise responsibility when using social media platforms and refrain from creating or sharing content that violates the country’s laws. – November 3, 2026
