PUTRAJAYA — The Dewan Rakyat will hold a special sitting on May 5 to discuss the United States’ (US) tariffs imposed on Malaysia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He confirmed the matter which was reported by a newspaper citing information from the Prime Minister’s Office.

“Yes. May 5,” he told the media at the Prime Minister’s Department Aidilfitri Celebration event here, Bernama reports.

The session for MPs to debate US tariff will come after Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz’s visit to Washington on April 24.

His two-day visit will involve meeting the US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to discuss the 24% “reciprocal” tariff imposed by the US against Malaysia.

The Malaysian delegation will also meet with several chambers of commerce, companies, and interest groups to explain the country’s position and the Cabinet’s response.

Tengku Zafrul has said that the visit is not for negotiations but to discuss Malaysia’s important role in the supply chain between Asia and the United States, especially in the semiconductor and electrical and electronics sectors.

In addition, as Asean chair, Malaysia will take the opportunity to state Asean’s position on the tariff issue, emphasising its belief in a rules-based global trading system and the principles of multilateralism in trade. – April 22, 2025
