KUALA LUMPUR – Petronas President and Group Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik has issued an apology following public criticism of his participation in a champagne celebration on the Formula One podium at the recent Singapore Grand Prix.
The incident, which attracted mixed reactions on social media, occurred after Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver George Russell claimed victory at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
As the team’s title sponsor, Tengku Taufik was invited to join the podium celebrations and accept the Winning Constructor Trophy on behalf of Petronas.
During the ceremony, he was seen celebrating alongside the Mercedes team, including spraying and being sprayed with champagne – a customary part of post-race festivities after the top three drivers were presented with bottles.
In a statement today, Tengku Taufik acknowledged that his actions were spontaneous and made in the heat of the moment but recognised they may have been “misplaced” considering the sensitivities involved.
“While I can categorically state I did not consume any alcohol, as a Muslim, I should have been more aware of the sensitivities associated with taking part in such celebrations,” he said.
“Accordingly, I want to apologise for any unintended offence caused and take full responsibility for my actions.”
The Petronas CEO also expressed his gratitude for the ongoing public support for the company’s involvement in Formula One, describing the sport as “the pinnacle of motorsport competition.”
“The successes we deliver now and in the upcoming era of sustainable fuels will indeed bear testimony to Malaysian innovation and capabilities,” he added.
Petronas, which has been a title sponsor and technical partner of Mercedes-AMG Petronas for more than a decade, has played a significant role in the team’s dominance in Formula One.
