KUALA LUMPUR — The ringgit briefly breached the RM4 level against the US dollar at 2.27pm today, its strongest since April 2018.

Bernama reports the local currency strengthened to 3.9992 versus the greenback, its strongest level in more than seven years. It was last seen at this level on June 18, 2018, at 3.9960/9990.

It strongest level then was 3.86 in April 2018.

Economists recently predicted that the ringgit would trade within a range in the first half of 2026, before strengthening towards the 3.94 level against the US dollar in the latter half of the year, supported by Malaysia’s positive economic outlook.

They noted that anticipated United States Federal Reserve rate cuts, along with other US-centric issues, were likely to further weaken the greenback. – January 23, 2026
