KUALA LUMPUR – The pilot, who was killed in yesterday’s air crash in Bandar Elmina, was the son-in-law of Johor Corporation (JCorp) president and chief executive officer Datuk Syed Mohamed Syed Ibrahim.

In a Facebook post today, the state investment vehicle conveyed its condolences to Syed Mohamed’s family and the families of other victims who died in the sudden tragedy.

“As they navigate through this difficult period, we respectfully request and deeply appreciate everyone’s understanding in granting the family their much-needed privacy,” it added.

While the post did not name Syed Mohamed’s son-in-law, local celebrity Remy Ishak’s manager Azlin Abas confirmed with Scoop that the individual was pilot Shahrul Kamal Roslan.

Yesterday, Remy had taken to Instagram to express his shock over the unexpected crash, recalling how he had just met with Shahrul and his wife a couple of days ago.

Shahrul’s mother, 67-year-old Mahanum Ismail, had also previously told reporters outside the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital’s forensic department that “I love you, mama” were the last words her son had said to her.

She added that her son’s words kept replaying in her mind.

Meanwhile, Shahrul’s brother-in-law, Syed Tahir Syed Mohd, said today that the victim was a jovial and caring individual who was known to be a competent pilot.

He added that the late pilot had previously worked at Malaysia Airlines and Etihad Airways.

Shahrul left behind his wife and four sons, aged between three and 12.

The incident, which occurred at about 2.50pm yesterday, resulted in 10 casualties, of which six were passengers and two crew members, including Shahrul, onboard the flight.

The remaining two victims were a delivery rider and a e-hailing driver passing by when the plane crashed.

The flight crashed two minutes before it was due to land at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang and did not make any mayday calls prior to its crash. – August 18, 2023
