Elmina crash: Oyen is no more

Oyen Elmina's death makes it the 11th victim of the tragic crash, says one of its rescuers

KUALA LUMPUR — The injured ginger cat which was rescued at the site of the recent Beechcraft 390 plane crash at Bandar Elmina, Shah Alam, died yesterday, following complications stemming from its injury.

Taking to Instagram, Dr Zul Erwan Azmi who operates the Zul Erwan Veterinary Clinic’s said that the rescued feline fondly called ‘Oyen’ (orange) had also been diagnosed with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).

“It is unfortunate to inform (all), Oyen Elmina has left us all for good today (yesterday).

“Oyen who was found positive for FIV (AIDS for cats), has cause Oyen’s immune system to be disrupted.

“The complication of (Oyen)’s wound on his spine cause the bacterial infection to spread even faster.

“Oyen started to become weaker and while immediate treatment was administered as best as possible but Oyen failed to make it.

“Thank you to everyone who prayed for Oyen,” he said.

In a separate Instagram post, earlier Dr Zul also credited the individuals who were involved rescued Oyen including Mohd Azwa Mohd Zain, Arlyia, Richie Bobby Bujang and Tommy Leo Rahsak.

Richie expressed his sadness over Oyen’s passing.

“The 11th victim is officially gone. Utmost thanks to Zul Erwan and team who had done a really great job saving Oyen sincerely. 

“Thanks a lot to my team and to everyone who supported Oyen. I’m sure he’s very grateful to have you guys standing with him,” Richie wrote on his Instagram story.

On August 17, the private plane crashed about two minutes before it was due to land at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang after its departure from the Langkawi International Airport. 

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) later said that the aircraft did not make any mayday calls prior to the accident. 

The crash resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals, one of whom was Pelangai state assemblyman Datuk Seri Johari Harun who was laid to rest on August 20 at the Raudhatul Sakinah Muslim burial ground in Batu Caves, Selangor.

Besides the two crew members and six passengers aboard the flight, other casualties of the crash are Foodpanda delivery rider Muhamad Hafiz Muhamad Salleh and Grab car driver Sharipuddin Shaari. — August 28, 2023
