5.5-magnitude quake shakes northwest Myanmar

Meteorology Dept confirms occurrence with epicentre near Paungbyin town

YANGON – A 5.5-magnitude earthquake jolted northwest Myanmar at about 1.58am local time today, the country’s Meteorology and Hydrology Department (DMH) announced.

According to the DMH, the epicentre was determined to be about 25.7 km to the north and northwest of Paungbyin town in the Sagaing region, reported Xinhua.

The epicentre, with a depth of 58km, was initially determined to be at 24.49 degrees north latitude and 94.78 degrees east longitude, the DMH said.

The earthquake was also strongly felt in Homalin town in the Sagaing region, a local resident said. – September 12, 2023
