Langkawi MP’s remarks reflect his ‘perverted’ mindset: Teresa Kok

Seputeh MP says motion to refer him to Parliamentary Right, Privileges Committee underway

KUALA LUMPUR – Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said the lewd remarks by Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah (Langkawi-PN) towards her in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday (October 26) reflected his “perverted” mindset, adding that he has disgraced himself in Parliament.

Speaking to Scoop, Kok also said she had yet to decide whether she would personally take action against Suhaimi on the matter.

However, she said Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman will submit a motion to the Dewan Rakyat speaker to refer Suhaimi to the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee.

She also lamented that she has faced a number of sexually suggestive remarks by male MPs previously.

“I have no such plan at the moment (to pursue action). I want to let him be judged by the court of public opinion,” Kok said.

“So far, those who threw sexist remarks against me have been judged and criticised heavily by the public. The best position for me is to let them be judged.”

Suhaimi was about to end his debate on the national budget in Parliament yesterday while inviting people to see penguins at the Underwater World Langkawi when Kok suddenly interjected, asking the Langkawi MP if one could wear a pair of shorts to the beach on the island.

“To YB Seputeh, it is fine even if you come without wearing anything,” followed by bursts of laughter from the male MPs sitting behind Suhaimi.

He added: “I forgot to mention that I want to imagine Seputeh (Kok) coming to Langkawi without any clothes on.”

On November 21, 2016, Kok was the target of sexist comments from former Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, who called Teresa “the only woman with a Kok”.

“Why is Seputeh (Kok) going ‘kekekeke’ (giggling)? The only woman with a ‘Kok’ is in Seputeh,” said Tajuddin, who was immediately slammed by other MPs demanding that he retract the offensive statement.

On April 10, 2014, Kok was angered by Kinabatangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, who accused her of dressing “inappropriately”. She was wearing a red and white striped long-sleeve top and a knee-length red skirt.

“The skirt goes until the knees. I can see the knees. How can this dress be allowed?” Bung Moktar said, adding that school girls who visit the Parliament will assume they can “dress however they want” if Kok is allowed to wear as such. – October 27, 2023
