KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu has suspended its Kuala Kangsar MP, Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid, for a four-year period.

The suspension came after he publicly expressed support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership.

Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said that the decision was reached after a meeting of the party’s disciplinary board, which convened to investigate allegations of disciplinary and constitutional violations against Iskandar.

“After a thorough review of all documentary evidence, considering the gravity of the offence, its implications for the party, and a review of the explanatory letter from Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain, the disciplinary board found him in violation of Clause 22.1(f) of the Bersatu constitution,” he said in a statement.

As a result, Iskandar’s party membership and all of his positions within the party have been suspended for a four-year term, effective as of the decision date, November 3, 2023.

Iskandar Dzulkarnain declared his support for Anwar’s leadership through a statement on October 12.

He cited ongoing complaints from his constituents and emphasised the pressing need to address the rising cost of living in his constituency as reasons for his stance.

In addition to Iskandar, another Bersatu lawmaker, Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman, has also expressed support for Anwar’s leadership.

The Labuan MP explained the decision by highlighting the various challenges faced by the island’s people, including the escalating cost of living and issues related to water and electricity supply in the region. – November 4, 2023
