KUALA LUMPUR – The Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) system, which includes Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technologies, is expected to be trialled next year, said Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad (Lipis-BN).

He told the Dewan Rakyat during the Minister’s Question Time that a study is still being done and the improvements will be experimented with in 2024 to discern their suitability for nationwide implementation.

The MLFF, which is a barrier-free highway tolling system, enables toll fee collection without requiring vehicles to slow down.

“So far, we have 416 RFID lanes nationwide, which is why we want to execute MLFF. With that, RFID and ANPR will allow toll operators to detect car numbers (plates) and increase efficiency,” he said in response to a supplementary question by Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden (Alor Star-PN).

“According to my observation, the MLFF system in other countries proves that it is effective. We have also gotten feedback from other MPs and stakeholders.”

In March this year, it was reported that the Sg Besi Expressway (Besraya) would be the first location for MLFF proof-of-concept, which involved installing front-end gantries.

Additionally, the open toll payment system, which allows highway users to pay tolls using debit and credit cards, was implemented on 11 highways starting September 29.

“Road users now have another option. This is also the first step towards implementing the multi-lane free flow system in the future,” said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi after launching the open payment system at the Loke Yew Toll Plaza in Besraya. – November 6, 2023
