Is Guan Eng related to Chin Peng?: Rafizi suggests MPs use ChatGPT for fact checking

The economy minister made a reference to the ongoing scandal in a tongue-in-cheek video on his social media

KUALA LUMPUR – PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli has suggested that lawmakers utilise online artificial intelligence (AI) tools to review their statements before making them public, in an apparent swipe at PAS’ Kepala Batas MP Siti Mastura Muhammad.

Rafizi shared his recommendation in a brief video posted on his social media accounts today as part of his #TanyaRafizi initiative, in which the economy minister answers questions on certain issues of public concern.

An individual off-camera asked Rafizi if he had “tips on how to avoid getting fined” since the Pandan MP has been involved in a number of legal cases.

“Nowadays, it’s probably easier (to avoid getting sued). Last time, about 10 (or) 12 years ago, I had to properly check (facts) and go through a lot of documents to make sure that my facts were legitimate.

“This was to ensure that if I was sued and the case went to court, I would win (the case). But nowadays, we have ChatGPT,” he added cheerily, referring to the free-to-use content generator programme which can generate human-like text in response to queries.

The video then cuts to a screen-recording of a ChatGPT-user inputting the question “Is Lim Guan Eng related to Chin Peng?” on the software.

The question is believed to be a reference to how Siti Mastura had previously claimed that DAP national chairman Guan Eng’s father, party stalwart Lim Kit Siang, has family ties with the former Malayan Communist Party leader.

ChatGPT then answered: “No, Lim Guan Eng is not related to Chin Peng” while explaining in depth on how Guan Eng and Chin Peng have “distinct roles and backgrounds in Malaysian history.”

The user then asked the bot if it is sure, to which the answer was: “Yes, I am confident about this information.”

At Parliament earlier today, DAP’s Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said she will be initiating legal action against Siti Mastura after the latter’s failure to respond to a previously issued letter of demand.

Kok said she had served Siti Mastura the letter of demand on November 10 and given the first-time MP three days to apologise and retract her statements claiming that certain DAP figures are related to one another, as well as the long-deceased Chin Peng.

On Tuesday, Siti Mastura’s lawyer Ahmad Amzar Ahmad Azlan confirmed that she had received four letters of claim, from Kok, Kit Siang, Guan Eng and his wife Betty Chew.

Siti Mastura’s statement was previously recorded at Bukit Aman police headquarters after police reports were lodged against her for claiming that Guan Eng and Kit Siang were related to the former Singapore prime minister – the late Lee Kuan Yew – and Chin Peng.

She made the claim in a speech at a PAS programme in Kemaman, Terengganu, on November 4, of which video is available.

Meanwhile, Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan alleged that Siti Mastura’s speech was based on a book titled ‘Bahan Kempen Komunikasi BN’ ostensibly made available by Barisan Nasionall (BN) during the 15th general election in November last year.

As such, the Bersatu lawmaker challenged DAP to take action against its unity government partner. – November 16, 2023
