Idealism crucial, but strong talent, organisation key to move forward: Rafizi

PKR deputy expresses concern over delegates’ leadership skills compared to previous generations

PUTRAJAYA – Organisational strength and talent are just as important as a strong idealism to bring PKR forward, said party deputy president Rafizi Ramli.

While having exceptional idealism could attract more members to join the party, Rafizi said it would be futile if it is in incapable hands.

Despite being proficient in administering the party wings, he expressed concern that the delegates’ leadership skills were lacking, as they did not have equal experience as party members of previous generations.

“Idealism will go nowhere, if (a party has) a large number of people who are disorganised and are without a leadership that could provide an image of the future.

“Idealism without organisational strength and proper leadership talent cannot be translated to the people,” he said while officiating the PKR Women and Youth congress 2023 at Putrajaya International Convention Centre, today.

Rafizi referred to PAS – a party with a strong number of members and Islamic idealism but still lost in general elections.

He also mentioned that delegates from both the Women’s and Youth wings in the past had more opportunities to helm the nation as they were academically qualified with notable participation with non-governmental organisations.

Nonetheless, he said the current leadership could build a foundation and instil a process for new members to make their “fresh” contributions to the party, so it could be further developed for the people’s sake.

Rafizi also called on the delegates to reflect on their idealism and the reason they joined the party – as he said PKR is a party that would not necessarily garner support.

“If your idealism is about positions, how often do you get this chance? Even if you do get the opportunity, how often can you handle the challenges without feeling disappointed?”

“In the past, having a position meant wealth. If you have a position now, you would face a lot of repercussions,” he said, adding that numerous of his peers in the past took the “shortcut” for power. – November 25, 2023
