Muhyiddin makes ‘U-turn’, will run for Bersatu presidency upon wife’s greenlight

Party president highlights spouse as ‘biggest power’ behind decision, not delegates

SHAH ALAM – Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin made a “U-turn” decision after deciding to run for the party’s presidency, during its polls next year.

Muhyiddin said the decision was made after receiving blessings from his wife Puan Sri Noorainee Abdul Rahman.

“My wife attended yesterday and she texted, asking me to stay another term and to not disappoint them (the members). She also said they needed me.

“I replied yes, I know, and asked her, so (what)?

“Later, she replied: ‘carry on, I give you my blessing, Bersatu still needs you, (the party) is still not strong’.”

“I said okay, I will stay for another term,” he said during the president’s winding-up speech at the party annual general meeting (AGM) today.

He pointed out the biggest power behind his decision was not the Bersatu delegates but his wife instead.

After announcing his running for the presidency, Muhyiddin urged party members to continue pledging their loyalty and allegiance.

The announcement earned boisterous cheers from top party leaders as well as delegates who were in attendance, today.

Previously, delegates from Bersatu’s 2023 AMG today unanimously rejected Muhyiddin’s decision to not defend his presidency during the party polls next year.

The rejection was voiced out through 20 debaters during the AGM’s debate session.

Their decision came as a follow up after Bersatu’s Supreme Council, yesterday also rejected Muhyiddin’s decision to not defend his party position.

In his speech before announcing the “U-turn”, Muhyiddin said he wanted to be the party’s adviser or Bersatu adviser council chairman to give advice and guide the party’s direction, but it was also rejected.

Meanwhile, during a press conference, the Pagoh MP said firmly that his statement yesterday was not a gimmick.

“I’m not joking, you ask your friends who sat on the stage and listened (to the speech).

“This is not a gimmick. It was all written in my speech,” he said.

Muhyiddin also said the party constitution will not stop anyone who wants to run for next internal polls. – November 25, 2023
