KUALA LUMPUR – Another earthquake struck Mindanao, the Philippines, this evening, measuring 6.4 in magnitude.
The quake hit the southern island at 6.36pm at a depth of 81km, some 76-km north of Bislig, the Malaysian Meteorological Department said on X.
However, there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia, the department added.
This follows a 7.5-magnitude quake that hit Mindanao at 10.37pm yesterday, followed by several aftershocks.
AFP reported that the quake caused the evacuation of 45,000 residents in the Hinatuan municipality.
In Butuan City, northwest of the municipality, patients were evacuated from hospitals, some still on their beds and wheelchairs with IV bags hanging from support stands.
Last night’s quake was followed by strong aftershocks with magnitudes of 6.4, 6.2, 6.1 and 6.0 in the southern Philippines.
AFP also reports that two people were killed in the earlier magnitude-7.6 quake late last night, one of them a woman who was fleeing her home in Tagum city when a wall collapsed on her. – December 3, 2023
