Malaysia mustn’t rest on its laurels despite triumphs in 2023: Anwar’s New Year’s message

Real measure of success is ensuring Malaysians’ welfare, says prime minister

KUALA LUMPUR – As the year 2023 draws to an end, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hopes 2024 will bring a brighter and more positive atmosphere for the people and the country.

He said although the country has achieved notable successes, including a decrease in inflation, the lowest unemployment rate and economic development, these indicators do not represent the true measures of progress.

He said the real success lies in taking care of the welfare and well-being of the people.

“The year 2023 has come to a close. I am not quick to be satisfied, even though we have achieved some success in a short period of time, such as reducing inflation to the level of 2%, achieving the lowest unemployment rate and maintaining economic growth at 4%.

“I don’t want to be entranced by the data, be it inflation rates or unemployment percentages, as the real measurement lies in the welfare of the citizens.

“The percentage might be low. But those stressed with high costs of living must be addressed quickly,” he said in his New Year’s message tonight.

Hoping 2024 will bring a better and more positive change to Malaysians, Anwar said it is the responsibility of the leaders and their machinery to shift the focus towards the economy.

“This will ensure that we can alleviate challenges related to inflation, unemployment, the cost of living, education standards and public health while also guaranteeing quality public services,” he said.

Attributing the success of the unity government to teamwork, Anwar also praised the hard work put forth by all ministries and agencies.

“The country is finally able to enjoy political stability after having to go through many crises and uncertainties in the last few years.

“The decision made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the advice of the Malay rulers has enabled the government to achieve success,” he added.

He also hoped leaders across all sectors of society would give their best in carrying out and achieving a total reformation in 2024.

“This is only a preview of the long road of reformation. Falling under the spell of complacency would only lead us into a state of slumber.

“Work harder in 2024. That is our determination for the year 2024. Happy New Year 2024!” he said. – December 31, 2023
