KUANTAN – A man’s wish to attend his friend’s wedding went unfulfilled after he was reported to have drowned at Pantai Sepat here today.

Kuantan police chief Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said they received a report about the incident involving the victim Khoo Kim Chai, 36, at 1.36pm today.

He said the victim, a resident of Klang, Selangor, had gone to the beach with a 37-year-old male friend and two children at 9am.

While playing in the waves, both the victim and his friend were swept away by the current, but the friend managed to rescue himself.

“The victim was said to have disappeared, prompting his friend to seek help from others until the missing man was eventually located,” he said in a statement today.

Immediately after that, he said the victim received respiratory aid from personnel of the Pahang Civil Defence Force while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

However, Khoo reportedly died at about 11.10am while receiving treatment at the emergency ward of Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA), here.

Meanwhile, Pekan Civil Defence Force officer Ahmad Azmi Hanafiah in a statement said he received information about the incident at 9.50am from cleaning workers on duty around the beach.

He said the beach rescue personnel together with a doctor who happened to be at the scene helped the victim by performing CPR before he was taken to HTAA at about 10.30am. – January 6, 2024
