KUALA LUMPUR – Immigration authorities have kept up operations to nab undocumented migrants, with another 95 arrested at 25 premises around Ipoh and Gopeng.

Perak Immigration deputy director Sharmanrizal Rustam said 95 undocumented foreigners were arrested in a raid conducted from around 11am until midnight last night.

A boy and a girl of Myanmar nationality were among those detained, according to Bernama.

Authorities covered premises such as clothing stores, eateries, a car wash centre, an entertainment centre and a recreation centre, Bernama reported Sharmanrizal as saying.

Those detained were of various nationalities with the highest number from Thailand, comprising 23 women and 16 men.

Authorities have been conducting a spate of raids since late last year.

A major operation was conducted at Jalan Silang in the city centre on December 21, in which 1,101 foreigners were arrested. Of the number, 600 had legal action taken against them for lack of required documentation.

Last night, another operation rounded up 31 undocumented migrants from three areas in the city around Bukit Bintang, Suria KLCC and the Saloma Bridge, which are known as places where foreigners gather.

Since January 1, other raids have been conducted in Cheras, here, and Rawang, Selangor.

The authorities’ move to crackdown on undocumented migrants in other states follows the police’s identification of at least 10 locations where foreigners live and gather outside the Klang Valley.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay has said raids will continue and will be expanded nationwide.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has said that the migrant crackdown is also due to a rising number of foreigners found to be involved in crime. – January 7, 2023
