MPs claiming enough SDs to topple govt are ‘stupid’, ignorant of law, says Nazri

KUALA LUMPUR – Those who claim that the opposition has enough statutory declarations (SDs) to take over Putrajaya are clearly “stupid”; there is no need to give credence to such claims, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.

Malaysia’s ambassador to the United States has said the anti-hopping law, which came into force in October 2022, does not allow any elected MPs to jump parties; therefore, the claims are invalid.

“If such actions are legally prohibited, how can the opposition claim to have obtained enough SDs to overthrow the government?

“It’s such a shame that those making such claims are MPs and are stupid. They don’t know the law,” the former law minister said.

Nazri said this during the Suara Anak MADANI talk show yesterday, hosted by the prime minister’s senior political secretary, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.

Last week, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor claimed that Perikatan Nasional (PN) had already obtained a sufficient numbers of SDs to overthrow the unity government.

However, the PN election director did not provide details on the matter, including the number of SDs obtained.

Yesterday, Anwar, who declined to comment on the issue, said that he wanted to focus on more important matters.

Nazri also claimed that the only way to overthrow the Madani government was for the opposition to secure the support of three important people in the government now: the Barisan Nasional chairman, the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah chairman and the Gabungan Parti Sarawak leader.

“If these parties withdraw from the coalition, only then will the government collapse. Otherwise, it is not possible.

“Clearly, that is not going to happen,” he added.

The unity government, he said, would remain strong for another four years until the next general election.

“This is what I tell the American investors: they should not pay attention to this ‘white noise’ made by individuals who don’t understand how the law works.”

He further added: “The government, led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is on the right path and will remain strong.

The Suara Anak Madani show engages in casual discussions about policies or hot issues with guests.

The programme is streamed on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube in conjunction with the formation of the Madani government led by Anwar. – January 9, 2024
