Zayn Rayyan murder: 40 days later, still a puzzle for police

Over a month after 6-year-old’s tragic death, authorities are still without new leads in their investigation

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have no new leads in the murder of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin, 6, who was discovered dead in a stream near his home more than a month ago. 

The investigation is still ongoing, including tracing the suspect and determining the motive,  Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain told Scoop when contacted.

“All aspects are still under investigation,” he said.

Last week, Razarudin said investigations into the murder of the autistic boy were about 90% complete based on all the available evidence that could be collected, and that the biggest obstacle was determining the motive behind the murder, which made it hard to identify a suspect to target.

Razarudin told Scoop today that police could make an arrest if a target has a 60% likelihood of being a suspect.

Last week, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said police will not stop investigating Zayn Rayyan’s murder.

However, new leads are scarce, and all police have confirmed thus far is that the child was murdered elsewhere before being dumped in the stream. Police also said the murder was likely committed by only one killer.

Police reached out to Interpol for assistance in tracing a suspect.

Zayn Rayyan’s body bore defensive wounds and marks around his neck that indicated strangulation.

He was found on the night of December 7 during rainy weather after being last seen at 12.30pm two days earlier around the Idaman Apartments in Damansara Damai, where he lived.

The stream is located in a bushy area some 100m from his residence.

Within a week of his body’s discovery, police took DNA samples of more than 200 residents at the apartments, besides screening 5,600 people who lived there. – January 16, 2024
