KUALA LUMPUR – The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) is not withdrawing a charge against Muda secretary-general Amir Hariri Abd Hadi for staging a protest on the littoral combat ships (LCS) scandal.
Amir Hariri on X said the AGC had rejected his representation to have the charge withdrawn, and called this “selective prosecution”.
This is because others who had faced a similar charge are in the unity government and have been freed of their charges, he claimed.
“I consider this a form of selective prosecution. In April last year, three individuals who are now with the government were freed of similar charges under the Peaceful Assembly Act.
“The question must be asked, why is there different treatment of those who are seen as critical of the government?” Amir asked.
The cases he was referring to involved Amanah Youth chief Hasbie Muda, Batu PKR Youth chief Sabda Suluh Lestari Yahya and International Islamic University Malaysia student union president Aliff Naif, who were initially charged for their involvement in “Turun Malaysia” rallies in 2022 to protest against the rising cost of living.
Amir Hariri, meanwhile, had been charged over the LCS protest in front of the Sogo Complex on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman on August 14, 2022.
As organiser of the gathering, he was charged for failing to inform police five days before the protest that it would be held.
He faces a maximum fine of RM10,000 under the act. – January 29, 2024
