KUALA LUMPUR – Umno Youth has lodged a police report against DAP’s Tony Pua over the latter’s allegedly flippant remarks on social media about former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s sentence reduction.
Muhamad Nur Aizat Noor Azam, a member of the wing’s executive committee, said Pua should have known better than to make such comments as he had been a lawmaker.
“This issue cannot be toyed with, as we Umno members love and miss Najib,” he said after lodging a police report at the Dang Wangi police station today.
“Our stance is to respect the Pardons Board’s decision, as it follows the federal constitution and is made by the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“It is unsuitable for any individual, especially a former MP who should be well versed in the law. He should not be making slanderous and seditious statements.”
Following the report, he hoped police would investigate Pua under the Penal Code for slander and under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 so his posts would be removed.
Pua had been on a field day since Najib’s sentence reduction was announced by the Pardons Board secretariat for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
Yesterday, Pua incited the ire of Umno Youth, which led the wing to resort to police action over his comments relating to Najib.
In a Facebook post yesterday, Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said the youth wing would be lodging police reports nationwide over Pua’s remarks, which were posted online on Friday following the Pardons Board’s decision.
However, police today confirmed that Pua was currently being investigated for sedition over his criticisms.
