KUALA LUMPUR – A former Sarawakian parliamentarian with a legal background is tipped to be appointed as the next Dewan Negara president.

A source told Scoop that the figure has received the appointment letter, but is awaiting the official announcement on February 19.

The source said the leader was a lawmaker for a Sarawak constituency for two terms, between 1982 and 1990.

The former MP will be the successor to Tun Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who recently became the 8th Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak on January 26.

During the ceremony at Istana Negara, Wan Junaidi was also conferred the Darjah Kebesaran Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara award, which carries the title “Tun”.

He received the instrument of appointment from the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah in a ceremony at Balairung Kecil.

Earlier this week, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that the new Dewan Negara president has been confirmed, but did not disclose any information about the individual.

The announcement will come before the next Dewan Negara session on March 18. – February 11, 2024
