KUALA LUMPUR – Thailand’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been granted parole, according to local media reports citing Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong today.
This is just six months after his return from 15 years of self-imposed exile.
According to Reuters, Thaksin, who is serving a one-year sentence, is being treated at a police hospital.
The former Machester City football club owner was on a list of 930 prisoners who were considered elderly or ill and were granted early release.
The billionaire was elected prime minister twice and ousted in a 2006 military coup.
He was jailed for eight years on graft and abuse of power charges in August, but within days, his sentence was cut to one year by King Maha Vajiralongkorn. – February 13, 2024
