KUALA LUMPUR – At least one person is dead and 22 injured, among them children, after a spray of gunfire during the parade in Kansas City, Missouri, to celebrate the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory.

Police said of the victims, 15 are suffering from life-threatening injuries and six have minor injuries.

A spokesman for Children’s Mercy Hospital said it is treating at least 12 people – 11 of them children – and nine for gunshot wounds.

Police chief Stacey Graves told a press conference that three people have been detained for investigations, even though there is currently no known motive for the attack.

She added that the authorities are reviewing videos of the incident that took place nearing the end of the parade, just outside the city’s 109-year-old Union Station building.

According to police, the barrage of gunshots was fired outside near a garage near the station, sending the crowds running in all directions for safety.

City officials, Chiefs’ players, and staffers who attended the victory parade have been accounted for.

Meanwhile, the National Football League said in a statement that their “thoughts are with the victims and everyone affected”.

“We are deeply saddened by the senseless shooting that occurred in Kansas City today following the Chiefs’ celebration.”

The Chiefs on Monday (Malaysian time) defeated the San Francisco 49ers in overtime to win the Super Bowl.

Reuters reported that today’s deadly incident coincided with the sixth anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida – where a former student gunned down 17 people and injured another 17. – February 15, 2024
