KUALA LUMUR – Teng Yew Huat, the entrepreneur who founded Jaya Grocer, has died. He was 68.

Jaya Grocer chief executive, Adelene Foo, confirmed his passing and expressed the profound impact Teng had as the founder of the grocery chain.

“As the founder of Jaya Grocer, he was the heart and driving force behind the success and growth of our company. His passing is definitely a profound loss to the team at Jaya Grocer and to the industry,” she said in a statement.

“We request you to respect the privacy of the family during this difficult time. A memorial service is being planned and we will share further details with you as soon as it’s finalised.”

Founded in 2007 by the Teng family, Jaya Grocer aimed to establish a premium supermarket brand.

Currently operating 35 outlets across the country, the company has become a prominent player in the retail industry.

Teng’s entrepreneurial spirit extended beyond Jaya Grocer, as the family also pioneered the Giant hypermarket chain.

Teng’s strategic manoeuvres, including orchestrating Grab Holdings Ltd’s acquisition for RM1.8 billion in December 2021, showcased his business acumen and influence in Malaysia’s retail landscape. – February 23, 2024
