KUALA LUMPUR – Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram are inaccessible, with users worldwide taking to X to report problems logging in.

According to downdetector.com, the outage on Facebook began at 11.15pm, with 125,825 reports lodged.

The bulk of reported problems with Facebook involve logins.

Downdetector also showed that reports on Instagram outages began coming in at around 11pm, with the majority of problems involving the app.

The hashtags #facebookdown and #instagramdown are trending on X, and the words Meta, Facebook and Instagram are also trending topics.

Threads, also owned by Meta, is facing an outage as well, with reports of problems with logging in being filed with Downdetector at around the same time.

Users on X said they opened Facebook on the web only to find they had been logged out.

Instagram, meanwhile, did not show a logout page but the feed could no be refreshed.

Parent company Meta has yet to issue a statement. The last post on its X account for press releases, @MetaNewsroom, was 23 hours ago on how to edit messages on WhatsApp.

On X, users made light of the situation by poking fun at Meta, posting memes and GIFs to depict X owner Elon Musk’s supposed glee over his rival’s outage.

Others like @lijahbeatDRUM95 sounded relieved that Meta was facing a global outage and that his accounts were not hacked.

“… had me thinking my stuff got hacked,” he said, along with several laughing emojis.

“Talking about passwords? I forgot I even had one of those,” the same user added. – March 5, 2024
