‘I won’t budge despite death threat over KK Mart issue,’ says Umno’s Akmal

KUALA LUMPUR – Umno Youth wing chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh claims that he has received a death threat over the controversy surrounding the KK Mart convenience store chain and the “Allah”-printed socks.

Akmal also vowed to remain committed to his stance despite the alleged intimidation.

In a video posted on Facebook, Akmal disclosed that he was contacted by an individual who expressed concern over a purported death threat against him.

Akmal, however, affirmed his resolve to continue boycotting KK Mart and reassured the public that he would not be swayed by such threats.

Akmal also said he will file a police report at 5.30pm today to ensure the safety of himself and his family.

Quoting a verse from the Quran, he underscored his belief in divine protection and expressed his confidence in the authorities to investigate the matter.

“I will make a report to protect myself and my family, but God willing, don’t worry everyone, I won’t budge even an inch, my position will remain the same,” he said.

In light of Umno Youth’s stance on boycotting KK Mart following the controversy surrounding the sale of socks printed with the word “Allah,” Akmal reiterated the wing’s position.

However, while emphasising the importance of holding accountable those who disrespect Islam, he clarified that boycotting non-Muslim businesses unrelated to the issue was “unfair”.

This statement comes amid criticisms from Penang Mufti Datuk Seri Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor, who deemed blanket boycotts against non-Muslim businesses excessive and contrary to Islamic teachings.

Akmal’s remarks on the death threat comes amid legal proceedings against individuals and companies involved in the controversy.

Earlier today the founders of KK Supermart & Superstore Sdn Bhd, Datuk Seri Chai Kee Kan, along with his wife Loh Siew Mui, were brought to trial for allegedly offending Muslims. They pleaded not guilty to charges related to intentionally hurting religious sentiments.

Additionally, the directors of KK Mart’s importer, Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd, face charges of abetting in distributing the controversial socks.

Legal proceedings are ongoing, with bail set for the accused individuals. The case stems from a raid where police discovered the contentious attire, sparking widespread outrage and prompting apologies from KK Mart.

KK Supermart & Superstore Sdn Bhd has also initiated legal action against Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd, seeking damages for alleged business sabotage. – March 26, 2024
