PAWS will not take in captured stray dogs from MBSA programme

Shelter says it was not consulted nor informed on move aimed to catch and kill strays, would not accept conditions even if informed

KUALA LUMPUR – The Paws Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) will not accept any dogs captured by the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA).

The animal shelter’s management, via its Instagram page today, said that they were not consulted by MBSA nor informed of its programme relating to capturing and killing stray dogs.

This response follows MBSA’s recent comment, which said that the captured dogs would be sent to the shelter for “further action”.

“We would not agree to the conditions stipulated in the task force notice, even if we were consulted or informed beforehand.

“We would like to assert that PAWS will not be accepting any stray animals caught in this operation,” it said today.

Yesterday, MBSA said in a statement that the operation, which will be carried out by its task force, is part of the city council’s initiative in collaboration with the Shah Alam resident representative.

It said the operation aimed to better understand the best methods to capture and prevent stray dogs from roaming in residential areas.

“The operation will be carried out at 24 resident representative zones in Shah Alam, where dogs captured will be placed at MBSA’s temporary shelter (Pustawan) before being sent to PAWS for further action.

“When at Pustawan, the animals will be cared for and fed, as well as placed at suitable places throughout their confinement.

“We would like to emphasise that MBSA will always take care of captured animals’ welfare and ensure that the capture is done according to the correct procedure,” MBSA said.

It was also reported that throughout 2023, there were up to 3,289 complaints regarding stray dogs. Meanwhile, between January and March 19 of this year, a total of 445 complaints were received.

The notice, which was made public, triggered widespread outrage on social media following the leak of a memo containing the council’s proposal.

The statement released by MBSA yesterday aimed to address the public’s anger.

According to the memo, the operation aims to capture and euthanise 500 stray dogs within the Setia Alam area.

Volunteers will receive RM30 for each dog they catch between April 22nd and 24th. – March 31, 2024
