Owner of suitcase found filled with RM500,000 has come to claim it, say police

Timber firm director claims was unaware luggage was not put into his vehicle, say cops

KUALA LUMPUR – After waiting for over a week, police say that the owner of a suitcase containing RM500,000, found at a shopping centre in Damansara, has finally come forward to claim ownership of the money.

According to the New Straits Times, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said police spent over an hour recording the man’s statement after he arrived at the Damansara police station around 5pm yesterday.

In his statement, the man, who is a director of a timber company, claimed to be unaware that the suitcase containing the money taken from his friend’s apartment unit above the shopping centre was not put into his vehicle.

The suitcase, the man said, was taken from his friend’s house, who wanted to return the money after borrowing it last year for investment purposes.

He added that his friend thought he had brought the suitcase, along with another bag, with him to put in the car, then went straight home and left it there overnight.

The friend only realised that the suitcase was missing the next day.

Hussein said that the company director did not bring any evidence proving that the money belonged to his company when he arrived at the police station yesterday.

Investigations into the claim are still ongoing.

“The procedure after this is that he has to come to provide further statements about how he obtained that amount of money,” he said.

On March 20, security guards at a shopping centre in Damansara were surprised to find luggage containing cash exceeding RM500,000 in the parking lot of the premises.

Several hours after the press conference regarding the discovery of the money the following day, police confirmed receiving a report from a company claiming ownership of the luggage containing cash.

Last week, Hussein told Scoop that the money in question had not been claimed as the director, who was in his late 40s, failed to appear at the Damansara police station despite previously claiming ownership of the cash in the luggage

So far, only one individual has come forward claiming ownership of the suitcase containing the money. – April 1, 2024
