KUALA LUMPUR – The coming Gombak Integrated Transport Terminal could begin operating as early as June and is poised to transform Kuala Lumpur’s transport landscape, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He has said the terminal promises to become the nerve centre for the north-eastern sector of the capital, while assuming a pivotal role as the primary transit hub for the east coast.
Notably, it will seamlessly integrate with the ambitious East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, reaffirming the country’s commitment to modernising its infrastructure, he said.
“From what I have been told, we expect to open its doors and commence operations tentatively around June, but we do not have a certain final date for this,” he said.
He said the terminal was a good indicator that the ECRL project was being completed as scheduled, as the Gombak terminal is one of the stops on its rail route.
Beyond its strategic connectivity, the Gombak terminal is set to redefine commuter convenience by linking directly with the Gombak LRT station, promising passengers seamless transitions between rail and road.
Loke also expressed his intent to personally inspect the terminal after the Hari Raya celebrations, underlining the government’s commitment to ensuring top-notch public facilities.
The minister was speaking to journalists during a working visit to the Southern Integrated Terminal in conjunction with the Aidilfitri festivities.
The Gombak terminal has been in development since late 2017 but has faced delays in its completion.
In 2018, the Edge Malaysia reported that Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd, the project owner, instructed the contractor, China Communications Construction Company Ltd, to halt all activities under the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning contract for the ECRL project.
It was said that the project was not financially viable, and it was not expected to recoup its operating costs. – April 2, 2024
