KUALA LUMPUR – An 18-year-old motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries after a collision with a police vehicle during an operation to curb illegal racing in Melaka.

State police chief Datuk Zainol Samah said the victim, Mohammad Khairul Basahri, who was riding a Yamaha 135 LC, sustained internal injuries as well as a broken leg and thigh from the 2.56am incident at Jalan Gangsa Kesang, Durian Tunggal yesterday.

Bernama quoted Zainol as saying that the victim was taken to Melaka Hospital where he died while receiving treatment at its intensive care unit at 12.37am today.

“The police vehicle was heading to the location with warning sirens and its beacon light flashing after receiving complaints of noise and illegal racing in the area,” Zainol said in a statement earlier.

“The individuals at the side of the road had then tried to flee on their motorcycles. When the police vehicle tried to turn right onto a road, the victim and his motorcycle crashed into the police vehicle.”

Earlier, the case was being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.

Yesterday, a clip of the accident made the rounds on social media, with netizens expressing their shock over the incident.

In the video, a number of motorcyclists were seen revving up their bikes as others rode off in a panic, supposedly to escape police.

One motorcyclist, who appeared to be speeding, was involved in a collision with the police vehicle just as the car turned the corner, causing the biker to be thrown off as his motorcycle shattered upon impact. – April 11, 2024
