KUALA LUMPUR – A policeman was detained yesterday to assist in the investigation of a teenage motorcyclist who died after a collision with a police vehicle in Durian Tunggal, Melaka two days ago.

Melaka police chief Datuk Zainol Samah said preliminary tests were also carried out on the officer and he was free of any drugs.

So far, six reports have been lodged on the incident and three statements were recorded from witnesses and the victim’s family.

“The victim was pronounced dead at Melaka General Hospital on April 11, at 12.37am.

“This case is reclassified to Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 relating to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

“It provides for a prison sentence of not less than five years and not more than 10 years and a fine between RM20,000 and RM50,000,” he said in a statement.

Victim Mohammad Khairul Basahri, 18, succumbed to his injuries after a collision with a police vehicle during an operation to curb illegal racing in Melaka.

He had internal injuries as well as a broken leg and thigh.

A clip of the accident made the rounds on social media, with netizens expressing their shock over the incident.

In the video, a number of motorcyclists were seen revving up their bikes as others rode off in a panic, supposedly to escape police.

One motorcyclist, who appeared to be speeding, was involved in a collision with the police vehicle just as the car turned the corner, causing the biker to be thrown off as his motorcycle shattered upon impact. – April 12, 2024
