KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will be summoning three controversial social media influencers for questioning following complaints over their posts.

In a statement, MCMC said Salim Iskandar, Badrul Hisham Shaharin who is also known as Chegubard, and Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris who is also known as Papagomo, will be called in to have their statements on the matter recorded.

It said Chegubard and Salim’s statements will be recorded at MCMC headquarters in Cyberjaya, while Papagomo will be giving his at Setapak.

MCMC said the recordings are a follow-up to a complaint regarding content uploaded through social media platforms suspected of violating provisions under Act 588 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA).

It said the case is being investigated under Section 233 of the CMA, which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to one year, or both if convicted.

MCMC also reminded the public not to abuse the network and online application services to spread false information.

Last month, the police opened an investigation paper against Bersatu’s Chegubard for allegedly making seditious remarks regarding a Mercedes-Benz car gifted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said a similar investigation has also been initiated into Muhammad Zahid Md Arip, who is Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s former political secretary.

The investigations are under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948. – April 16, 2024
