Flash flood hits Kg Melayu Subang after prolonged downpour

Inundation disrupts Kelana Jaya LRT route, scuppers bus operations

KUALA LUMPUR – Kg Melayu Subang was struck by a flash flood as heavy rain persisted for over an hour.

Several main routes in the area became impassable as water overflowed from nearby rivers, affecting residential areas.

Kota Damansara assemblyman Muhammad Izuan Ahmad Kasim reported via social media that Subang Bestari and Kg Baru Sg Buloh were also affected.

Siti Sarah Wan Zulkifli, a resident of Kg Melayu Subang, said that she and her husband had packed their belongings to keep them safe in elevated areas.

“Even as the water approached our doorstep, we were already traumatised, recalling how three years ago it rose to waist level. Hopefully, it will recede soon,” she remarked, noting the area was experiencing light rain.

Meanwhile, Rapid KL announced via social media that bus operations had been temporarily halted due to flooding in the Kem Paya Jaras area.

“All bus stops are currently inaccessible. Affected routes include T112 & T102. We apologise for any inconvenience,” it stated.

Currently, the Kelana Jaya LRT line is operating on a reduced schedule due to a power failure caused by a lightning strike.

“The frequency of trains this afternoon will be reduced to 4-5 minutes. Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly,” Rapid KL added.

Meanwhile, other areas in Subang and Sg Buloh are inundated, according to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department.

Deputy director Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said a number of assets had been deployed to Kg Melayu Subang and Kg Kubu Gajah.

“The floods are due to the overflowing nearby river and the water levels are decreasing. The situation is under control and the two areas are not being evacuated,” he said in a statement. – April 16, 2024
