Warm reception for unity govt candidate in Kuala Kubu Baharu despite MCA snub: Loke

Noting positive feedback, transport minister emphasises need to remain grounded, not assume victory in by-election

KUALA KUBU BAHARU – Despite the lack of support from fellow component party MCA, the unity government has been receiving positive feedback from the people in Kuala Kubu Baharu leading up to the polls, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said the government’s candidate, Pang Sock Tao, has received a warm welcome from the locals here since campaigning began on Saturday.

“I have said before that we do not force any party to help if they do not want to; it is not an issue. The sentiment here is okay.

“The reception (Pang) has been receiving from locals during her visits here is positive,” he told reporters here today.

MCA announced that it would withhold its support for the unity government in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election if the candidate did not hail from Barisan Nasional (BN).

Previously, BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the coalition respected the honour system and that the incumbent party would be given priority to field the candidate in a by-election.

Meanwhile, Loke said the government’s campaign team must remain humble in their efforts and should not assume their victory is set in stone as the state seat is currently theirs.

“When we contest in the by-election, it is a level-playing field, and the voters will decide,” he said.

“Our role is to work hard when campaigning. All members, leaders, and component party friends are campaigning for our candidate. She (Pang) is also working hard to win the voters’ support.” – May 1, 2024
