KUALA LUMPUR – The German Foreign Office has strongly criticised the Israeli government’s decision to shut down Al Jazeera’s operations in Israel, while stressing the importance of a free and diverse press landscape in liberal democracies.

In a statement on X today, the office underscored the pivotal role of press freedom, particularly during times of conflict.

“A free and diverse press landscape is the cornerstone of every liberal democracy. In times of conflict, especially, it is of crucial importance to protect the freedom of the press.”

The statement comes in response to the Israeli authorities’ recent move to close Al Jazeera’s offices in Jerusalem, citing national security concerns amid ongoing tensions in the region.

The decision, which was met with international condemnation, has raised concerns about the suppression of independent media and the stifling of critical voices.

Germany’s Foreign Office labelled the closure of Al Jazeera as “the wrong signal”, echoing broader concerns about the erosion of press freedom and democratic values.

The move has sparked outrage among press freedom advocates, who view it as a blatant attempt to silence dissenting voices and restrict access to information.

The German government’s condemnation adds to growing international pressure on Israel to reverse its decision and allow Al Jazeera to resume its operations unhindered.

Israeli authorities conducted a raid on a Jerusalem hotel room utilised by Al Jazeera as its operational base, following the government’s decision to close down the Qatari-owned TV station’s local operations yesterday, as reported by Reuters.

The raid, captured in footage circulated online, depicted plain-clothes officers dismantling camera equipment in a hotel room believed to be situated in East Jerusalem.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet justified the shutdown, asserting that the network posed a threat to national security, particularly amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Netanyahu announced the unanimous decision on social media.

“The incitement channel Al Jazeera will be closed in Israel,” he said.

Al Jazeera swiftly denounced the move, labelling it a “criminal action” and refuting allegations of jeopardising Israeli security as “dangerous and ridiculous lies” that endangered its journalists. The network emphasised its right to pursue legal recourse in response to the closure.

Throughout the conflict, Al Jazeera has been critical of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, providing extensive coverage of the region. The closure of its operations in Israel marks a significant escalation in tensions between the network and the Israeli government. – May 6, 2024
