KUALA LUMPUR – A lorry driver transporting eggs died in an accident involving two other lorries carrying fruit at KM367 of the North-South Expressway, near Slim River, early this morning.
Muallim district police chief Mohd Hasni Mohd Nasir said police received reports about the incident, which occurred on the Sungkai to Slim River route, at approximately 5.45am.
“In the incident, one of the lorries had blocked off the entirety of the road heading south, causing a 13-km traffic jam.
“Therefore, road users are advised to exit at the Tapah, Bidor or Sungkai tolls as an alternative route to avoid the congestion while clean-up work is being carried out,” he said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said a team from the Slim River Fire and Rescue station, assisted by personnel from the Bidor station, rushed to the location of the accident after receiving a distress call at 4.40am.
He said that upon arrival, the team found that the accident involved three lorries: one carrying chicken eggs and two others loaded with fruit.
“Three lorries have collided and overturned, completely blocking the southbound highway.
“A victim was found trapped in a lorry loaded with chicken eggs and was confirmed dead by medical officers at the scene. The other two lorry drivers suffered only minor injuries,” he said in a statement.
Sabarodzi said the deceased victim was handed over to police for further action, and clean-up work was currently underway. – May 17, 2024
