Two weeks in, cops yet to determine motive of acid attack on Faisal Halim

IGP says authorities focused on identifying suspects based on photofit, those already arrested were not involved

KUALA LUMPUR – After more than two weeks, police have not identified the motive behind the May 5 acid attack on Selangor FC player Mohamad Faisal Halim.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the authorities are focused on identifying possible suspects based on the photofit that was drawn up from information given by three eyewitnesses.

So far, 23 people have been called to give their statements, but some may be called up again, depending on the needs of the investigation.

“We haven’t identified the motive of the attack. There was another case where a football player’s house was broken into.

“However, this one, I think the criminals have been watching his (Faisal) comings and goings.

“Our investigation is based on the video (from a CCTV footage). If a witness says something different compared to the footage, we will call up the witness to add or correct any information.

“It was chaotic during the incident, perhaps people did not notice what happened.

“However, we guarantee that those individuals who were arrested were not involved. We will call them up if necessary, depending on the course of the probe,” he said during a press conference at Menara KPJ here today.

The police also did not have much luck identifying possible suspects as only three of the eight fingerprints lifted were found to be in good condition.

As for updates on the recent photofit, Razarudin said no one has come forward to provide additional information.

According to the photofit, the suspect is believed to be in his 30s, about 165cm tall, medium-built, and has a dark complexion as well as wearing a face mask.

When asked if there was any connection between the attack on Faisal and national player Akhyar Rashid, Razarudin said it is difficult to confirm until the motives behind the attacks have been identified.

“Why not ask if the attacks on Akhyar, Faisal are linked with (the case) in Johor?

“If we get a motive, maybe we can say these incidents are planned. In the eyes of the criminals, football players have a lot of money.”

Razarudin added that the third person detained near Faisal’s house was found to be carrying out maintenance work in the residential area.

On May 5, Faisal suffered fourth-degree burns on several parts of his body after being splashed with acid by an unknown individual at a shopping mall in Kota Damansara. This injury has restricted his movement and speech. – May 24, 2024
