Express bus rear-ends tanker carrying cement on NSE, injuring 10

Victims, some of whom were badly hurt, sent to Ipoh hospital, say police

IPOH – Ten people, including a bus driver, were injured when the express bus they were on crashed into the back of a tanker lorry at KM290.9 southbound of the North-South Expressway, near here, early today.

Ipoh district police chief Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said they received information regarding the incident at 5.30am.

“All 10 victims, aged between 13 and 60, who suffered serious and minor injuries were sent to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here.

“However, 16 others, including the 30-year-old lorry driver, escaped unhurt,” he said in a statement today.

Abang Zainal Abidin said preliminary investigation found that the accident occurred when the 38-year-old bus driver, who was ferrying 25 passengers from Sg Nibong, Penang, to Kuala Lumpur, lost control of the vehicle, which then crashed into the back of the cement-laden tanker.

According to him, the bus driver has 15 traffic summonses, including two for traffic collisions, while a check of the bus record found that it had 38 summonses.

He added that the case was being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.

He urged those who witnessed the accident to contact the case’s investigation officer, Tang Chiew Song, at 016-550-6863 or go to the nearest police station to assist in the investigation. – May 31, 2024
