KUALA LUMPUR – Sg Bakap in Penang will be experiencing a by-election fever as the Election Commission (EC) fixed July 6 as polling day.

Deputy EC chief Azmi Sharom said nomination day for the state seat will be on June 22, with early voting on July 2.

This comes after PAS assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff died on May 24 after being in intensive care for weeks.

EC held a meeting at its headquarters in Putrajaya today to decide on the Sg Bakap by-election date.

This will be the eighth by-election since the 2022 general election in November.

Azmi said the electoral roll to be used for the Sg Bakap by-election is updated as of May 24, with 39,279 voters – 39,222 regular voters and 57 police officers.

The by-election will cost RM2.1 million, with 522 election workers to be appointed. It will also have nine polling centres with 65 polling channels and one early voting centre.

The nomination and vote tallying centre will be at the Jawi Multipurpose Hall in Taman Desa Jawi, Penang. The 14-day campaigning period will end 11.59pm on July 5.

He said the online application process for all foreign and domestic postal vote categories is open.

The closing date for applications is June 20 for Category 1A (election officials, EC members/officers, police, military and media personnel), June 13 for Category 1B (Malaysian citizens who are abroad) and Category 1C ( agency/organisation).

More details will be available on https://mysprsemak.spr.gov.my, MySPR Semak application or call 03-8892 7018/7218/7124, which will be open from June 18. – June 6, 2024
