KUALA LUMPUR – Another victim involved in an accident between a bus and a trailer lorry on Jalan Bahau-Keratong, Rompin early today has succumbed to his injuries. This brings the death toll to three.
Rompin district police chief Nor Azman Yusof was reported as saying that the third victim was identified as Hamzah Ahmad, 60, a school employee, who was receiving treatment at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital, Kuantan.
“Earlier, two victims were reportedly killed. The first victim is the second bus driver, identified as Mohd Adi Hasan, 29, and a teacher, Hasnatul Adilah Hassan, 48, while the trailer driver escaped uninjured,” he said.
Hasnatul Adilah, who was travelling with her 12-year-old son when the accident occurred, managed to ask how her son was before she breathed her last at the scene of the incident.
This was shared by her colleague Asmaniza Mohamad, 50, who said the deceased, who was a senior assistant at SK Jeram, Melaka, was found lying on her back outside the bus, Bernama reported.
“The deceased had time to ask about the condition of her youngest son, who was also on the bus. I said her son was on the bus, and a friend of ours had time to teach him how to speak,” he told reporters when met at Muadzam Shah Hospital’s forensic unit today.
It is reported that Hasnatul Adilah’s son, Farouq, is currently being treated in the yellow zone of the Hospital.
Asmaniza, known as “Cikgu Za,” also shared that, at the time of the incident, he was sleeping at the back of the bus but was shocked when he was hit by another passenger after the bus overturned.
“It was really dark, and the only sound was a crash. I tried to open the emergency door but couldn’t. I managed to get out through the small door at the top of the bus,” he said.
He said that after getting out, he managed to help some other friends who were on the bus before they were taken to Muadzam Shah Hospital for further examination.
In the 1.30am incident, a bus ferrying 39 passengers, including two drivers, went out of control, hit the lorry laden with iron coils, and overturned.
Nor Azman said the bus was ferrying teachers from SK Jeram, Masjid Tanah, Melaka, along with their children, to Terengganu to attend a benchmarking programme.
“Initial investigations found that the accident occurred when the bus driver lost control and collided with a trailer before overturning on the roadside slope,” he told reporters at the scene.
Those injured were taken to Muadzam Shah Hospital in Rompin and Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan.
Nor Azman appealed to eyewitnesses to provide information on the accident. – June 9, 2024
