Muda sits out Sg Bakap by-election to focus on ‘rakyat’s issues’

KUALA LUMPUR – Youth-based party Muda will sit out the Sg Bakap by-election to focus on its role as a “third force” in the nation’s political arena.

In a statement today, the party led by acting president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz said the decision was made after a series of engagements with the party’s central and Penang state leaders.

“Muda will continue to be the people’s voice in and outside Parliament by putting pressure on cost of living issues as well as demands for fair allocation to government and opposition lawmakers while continuing unfulfilled institutional reforms,” it added.

The party also said it had completed the first phase of its “rejuvenation” agenda, pointing to the launch of its digital membership registration.

Nomination day for the Penang state seat’s by-election, scheduled to take place on July 6, will be held tomorrow.

Coalitions Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional have both named their candidates for the poll, which was called following the death of PAS assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff.

Parti Rakyat Malaysia has also hinted at potentially contesting in the by-election. – June 21, 2024
