KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested three individuals, one of them a “datuk” who is a former officer at a subsidiary owned by developer Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd (SPNB) for allegedly accepting bribes for a housing project valued close to RM110 million.

The trio were remanded for five days from July 30 until August 3, following a remand order granted by magistrate Irza Zulaikha Burhanuddin to the anti-graft agency at the Putrajaya magistrate court yesterday.

A source from MACC said the trio, together with another individual, were believed to have accepted bribes from a construction company as a kickback for signing an additional construction agreement involving a Rumah Aspirasi Rakyat Daerah Kuantan housing development project, without approval from SPNB’s board of directors.

The signed agreement is believed to contain unfair clauses that have caused SPNB to bear losses amounting to tens of millions of ringgit.

“All (four) suspects were arrested at the MACC headquarters around 6.30pm until 7pm after their statements were taken

“One of them was freed under a bail issued by MACC,” said the agency in a statement.

Meanwhile, MACC’s senior director of investigation, Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim confirmed the arrests when contacted.

He said that the case is being investigated under Section 16 (a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 for soliciting and accepting bribes. – July 31, 2024
