KUALA LUMPUR – Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, has called on the coalition to accept Bersatu’s defeat in the Mahkota by-election with humility and to take immediate steps towards improving the party’s future performance.

Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, expressed confidence that despite the setback – which saw Umno secure a decisive victory with a majority of 20,658 votes – the defeat did not dampen PN’s resolve.

“God willing, PN, and Bersatu in particular, will rise again with greater determination to secure victory,” he said in a Facebook post today.

He extended his thanks to those who supported PN’s candidate, Mohamad Haizan Jaafar, who garnered 7,347 votes, significantly trailing Barisan Nasional’s Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah, who received 27,995 votes.

Muhyiddin also expressed gratitude to PN’s campaign team, recognising their sacrifices in terms of energy, time, and financial commitment.

Syed Hussein’s vote majority was nearly four times that of his predecessor, the late Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, who won the seat with a margin of 5,166 votes.

The by-election was triggered by Sharifah’s passing on August 2. – September 29, 2024.
