KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized over RM100 million in cash, suspected to be linked to political funds.
A source revealed that the seizure was made during a raid on a house belonging to a former senior aide to former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The source stated that the cash was discovered in several bags and safes within a room in the residence.
“MACC officers also confiscated documents, jewellery, and electronic devices during the raid.
“The operation was conducted following months of ongoing investigations and surveillance into allegations of abuse of power and money laundering involving the former senior aide,” the source was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.
The source further added that investigators are now examining the origin of the funds, including possible links to political financing.
The investigation is focusing on the former senior aide’s role in handling the seized funds.
Scoop previously reported that four aides to the ninth prime minister had been detained by the MACC to assist in investigations into alleged corruption and money laundering.
When contacted, MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests.
“It concerns corruption and money laundering,” he said briefly to Scoop.
Meanwhile, media reports citing sources have indicated that several cases are under MACC investigation, including government expenditure amounting to RM700 million for promotional and publicity purposes.
According to sources, two of the four detained individuals hold the title of “Datuk”.
“The arrests were made under Section 16a of the MACC Act and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA),” the source stated.
Previously, Ismail Sabri, 65, was reported to have collapsed early last Saturday due to high blood pressure. He is now stable and fully conscious.
His press secretary, Azran Fitri Rahim, stated that Ismail, who is receiving treatment at a hospital in Damansara, still requires close monitoring. – February 24, 2025
