KUALA LUMPUR – The remains of Malaysia’s fifth prime minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, arrived at the National Mosque at 8.15am today for funeral arrangements, following his passing at the National Heart Institute (IJN) at 7.10pm yesterday.
The government has confirmed that Tun Abdullah, who was 85, will be accorded a state funeral, with burial to take place at Makam Pahlawan, within the grounds of the National Mosque (Masjid Negara).
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Department, the lying-in-state will be held at the mosque’s Main Prayer Hall from 10am to 1pm, allowing members of the public to pay their final respects.
“The funeral prayer will be performed after the zuhur prayer at the National Mosque, and the burial will follow at the Heroes’ Mausoleum, National Mosque, Kuala Lumpur,” said the Prime Minister’s Department in a statement issued last night.
The government has also issued a dress code for those attending. Muslim male visitors are required to wear a black national attire with a plain black samping and black songkok. Non-Muslim men should attend in a dark lounge suit.
Muslim women are advised to wear a dark-coloured baju kurung or kebaya labuh with a white headscarf or shawl, while non-Muslim women are expected to dress modestly in dark-coloured clothing with a white shawl.
“Other appropriate attire may also be worn,” the statement added.
As a mark of respect, all buildings within a 2km radius of Masjid Negara are to fly the Jalur Gemilang at half-mast until the funeral ceremony is completed. – April 15, 2025
